FreeTrafficSystem.com Squeeze Theme
One Nuance to Pay Attention to…
When we recently released premium WP theme for the users of FreeTrafficSystem.com we forgot to emphasize on one nuance. We have been absolutely sure that this nuance was obvious, but the real case experience has shown that a portion of the users who downloaded the theme from their members area – got into the following issue – their blog navigation menu line was broken due to overuse of buttons in it.
But let’s do it step by step and explain how it should be done and what to avoid.
You see, FreeTrafficSystem.com Squeeze Theme was created not as a simple blog theme – this is more of an Internet marketing tool – a theme that helps you to harvest emails from the visitors of this page. And the layout of this theme was tested out and carefully balanced to show decent conversions between visits and signups.
That is why in the layout of this theme we made the place available for 3-5 buttons in the navigation bar. This makes sure that design is neat and nice and the attention of the visitors is not distracted on anything else but the email harvesting web form (the primary purpose of this design).
So, an ideal example (when it comes down to the use of the buttons in the blog navigation menu) is a screenshot below…

As you can see, just a few buttons fit perfectly well into the layout.
Yes, this is not a usual blog layout – and it should not be, because a visual psychology of the squeeze page is really different from the visual psychology of a simple blog.
Our mistake was that we did not seriously emphasize on it. As a result of it people started to put lots of pages and categories into the navigation bar and we saw cases like this one, for example…

And, of course, that big number of buttons in the navigation bar instantly broke the beauty of the layout.
So, the rule of a thumb is not to create too many buttons with large names in the navigation menu. This is not a regular blog – this is your squeeze page. You have to set priorities here. Either you want to focus the attention of your visitors on the email form or you switch to the regular blog (where email harvesting does not have this great CTR).
But What If I Already Have
Lots of Categories and Pages on My Blog
And Still Want to Squeeze Emails?!
Well, our point of view is that you can’t sit on 2 chairs at the same moment. But if you want – no problems, because there is a “work around” for this situation.
There are 2 plugins (free plugins) that will help you to choose what to show and what not to show in the nav bar of the blog. Thus you don’t need to change anything in the structure of your blog and can tune up the looks of your nav bar.
The plugins are official and taken from WordPress.org site. They are:
- Exclude Pages plugin by Simon Wheatley – this will help you to take care of the pages in blog;
- Advanced Category Excluder plugin by DjZoNe – this one helps to take care of the categories.
These two plugins completely solve the issue of buttons overuse in navigation menu.
