yeah, I also have to agree, with most backlink checking tools, you only get a fraction of the real numbers and if you are serious about growing your site and beating the competition you need a toll that will give you more than just a small percentage.

Agree with the previous comment. I also use Market Samurai and we can get a great information about our competitor's backlinks. But still there is problem. Though the software shows links, we can't overtake our competitor by building more links. From my knowledge I can say the result is not 100% accurate. Otherwise ranking would have more easier. Backlink building is always a continuous process.

No doubt there is a measure of backlinks hidden by the search engines, but Market Samurai is a able to give a fair indication of the possible number of backlinks a site has. It is not correct to say, just because I know the number of backlinks my competitor has, I can just build more backlinks then him and take over the top positions on Google, because the value of the backlinks mean more than the number of links. I think backlink checker tools can give a fair indication of the number of backlinks a site has mainly because I have been checking them with new sites I build and promote!

I am 100% agree with it. According to backlink checker tool I have already created more backlinks than my competitor for one of my site but still I am not above my competitor. Well it will take some more time for me and I believe with FTS I will be able to do that.

That was a really informative video but I think Yahoo counts the number of backlinks in a better way but the bad thing is that it combines the dofollow and nofollow links.

Interesting stuff...

I spend so much time checking backlink numbers for a few purposes, definately going to spend less time doing that now!

You are right that one cannot get the list of all backlinks from seo tools but atleast it can give you an idea of what anchor texts has been used which is also very important for seo - isn't it?

This is exactly what I say in the video - we DO use link building checking tools

BUT

I know that with any tool I will see maybe one half of the backlinks, maybe just 10%, maybe just 1%.

So, it is very important to bear in mind that when you try to measure how many backlinks your competitor has built, then you should always remember that you do not know what portion of backlinks you see. That is why any time I am checking the backlinks to a specific site, I kind of say to myself "Well, I see 100 backlinks - in reality it can be 1,000 or 10,000 backlinks"

This phrase really saves me from quite a stupid frustration of "I have built 100 backlinks - more than this site XYZ - why the heck aren't I page 1?!!"

I do not say in the video "do not use these tools", I even admit I use them in the video. But what I say is that one should be prepared to tons of surprises when using these tools, trying to measure the competition and expect something from it.
