Dumb and Dumber in Keyword Research

It is a pleasure to see how many people started to use Free Traffic System for building one way links. But it is not pleasant at all to see that the majority of people are using “the path of dumb and dumber” in choosing the keywords for which they are fighting.

We decided that it is the very time our team steps in and shares some keyword research knowledge, because we do not want you to waste your energy and enthusiasm and see no results from it.

What’s the Problem?
Can’t I Use Free Traffic System for Any Keywords I Wish?

You can. But we warn you right now that if you are trying to target highly competitive keywords like: money, investments, health, fitness, SEO, Internet, Internet marketing, business, loans, gardens, real estate and other “generic” terms with very high competition – then you must be prepared to months and months of diligent backlink building in Free Traffic System before you see any results.

The problem is that for these keywords some sites have build hundreds of thousands of backlinks. Surely it’s great to be Google top 10 for ‘poker’, but then you must be ready to submit hundreds of articles.

It is Much Easier…

… to choose keywords in your niche that:

- have minimum link building competition

- maximum search demand (stable search demand)

If you have a look at the page of Free Traffic System testimonials – the screenshots published there are showing the cases of fighting for reasonable keywords (we call keywords reasonable if they have moderate link building competition and nice search demand).

How Do You Find Reasonable Keywords?

Well, we are not going to share all our secrets. But the first thing we do is measure the link building competition for a keyword in Google by using this phrase in Google search box:

inanchor:”your keyword goes here”

The screenshot shows it in real action…

The example above shows that in Google for phrase “0 car finance” we have 16,100 pages that already have backlinks with this anchor and basically are our DIRECT link building competitors for this keyword.

Try the same for poker. When writing this post from our IP it was showing 140,000,000 direct link building competitors for ‘poker’. Are you ready to be the dumb and dumber to fight for this type of highly competitive keywords?

Is this “inanchor” All I Need?

No, it is not. We told that we will share with you just part of the tips we are using daily to find these reasonable keywords, and we did not promise to reveal all our secrets.

But inanchor is helpful enough to make a strategic look on your keyword. If you see that too many pages also started the link building fight, then better focus your energy on other keywords in your niche.

Guys, This Keyword Research Thing
Is Too Much for Me

No problems. We do not expect all Free Traffic System users to be curious enough about keyword research.

The first thing in getting visits to your webpage is knowing what people will type into the search engines to find what service or product your webpage offers. In finding this, you will need to know what we call, tier one key words and tier two key words or key phrases. An example of this is the keyword “trade” this is a tier one key word. If your webpage ranks on the first page of Google for the word “trade”, you will get a considerable amount of visits. However, the keyword “trade” has a vast meaning and so there are many different interpretations for the word. Are people searching for stock trade, a barter or what? On the other hand a key phrase like ‘commodities trade” or “pork bellies trade” for example are tier two keywords. In most cases you wont get as many searches or as many visits from a second tier keyword but the traffic you do get will be targeted and ready to buy your service or product.

Good information thank you for posting it. I had not thought about using in anchor in the search box. There are a lot of little things that we do not think about until some reminds us. Thanks for the reminder

Thanks to all for the kind comments and some ideas on the keyword research.

Answer to Akinwande – inside Free Traffic System you simply forget about a question “how to get backlinks” – you build as many as you need.

    Hi guys,

I’ve been using this service for a little over a week and think it is a bonafide way to develop backlinks. Sometimes we get to busy and forget about the details on the correct ways to accomplish goals.

This little reminder is a great way to let us know how to better use the system to really use backlinks to obtain better rankings.

From a common user perspective, say I’m interested to work at home. I fired up google. The first thing I type will be “work from home” – it generated 274,000,000 pages, then “work from home opportunity” – 98,200,000 pages, then ” work from home opportunities” – 3,360,000 pages, then “work from home opportunities guide” – 5,410,000 pages, then “work from home opportunities guides” – 5,620,000 pages. Wow, it’s such a big lists!!! And to get to the no:1 spot in Google……it’s a very difficult tasks indeed…..As a user of the search engine, to avoid vading through tons of pages….I might opt for “sponsor links” which I presume is adwords advertisement displayed on the very top of the page.

After getting involved in IM then only I realised that putting up a website is an easy task but getting on top of search listing of Google is really a nightmare. BEST OF LUCK TO ALL.

  12. Admin said on January 22nd, 2009 7:28 am

    Answer to jimisan

It looks that you missed the point of this post.

You see, when you type (for example) “work from home” this tells you NOTHING in terms of your link building competition. The huge number that you saw in Google was actually the number of all sites that have a COMBINATION from sensible “work from home” words on their pages.

That is why I tell in this post – use inanchor: – because inanchor shows how many pages already have backlinks for this keyword (in other words, how many web pages are your direct link building competitors).

If you would typed into Google inanchor:”work from home” you would see ~ 16,000,000

Now, I do not say that this is a small competition, but this is almost 20 times less than the number which you got.

And if you check inanchor:”work from home opportunities guides” you will see Google showing ZERO results which means Google sees no web pages that have backlinks for this keyword. And it means that if you build some nice backlinks with this keyword as anchor text, after Google digests these backlinks, you will be on page 1 for “work from home opportunities guides”

    Do you get an idea?

One of the keys to this post was to show how to measure competition. And simple typing of the keyword into Google shows nothing. Only inanchor can provide some viable info about your link building competition for the specific keyword.

inanchor is not everything you need to know, but pretty enough to start understanding what matters and what not.

As you can see, now the picture is not that gloomy ;)

Well folks, my post with the reply from the Admin has shed some lights as how we could get to the no:1 spot in Google. That’s very encouraging……BTW Admin……..do you think you can reserve the keyphrase for me in fts? ;-) Thanks.

Thanks for highlighting the inanchor tip. I have been using it for quite a while, but I find that not many people know about it and it isn’t often shared by the ‘big guys’.

  15. Admin said on January 26th, 2009 10:15 am

Answer to Rika Susan’s Flooring DIY News

You see, unlike some big gurus – we are in the same boat with you.

The more successful each Free Traffic System user gets, the more content and blogs this user can add to our system, the more ‘word of a mouth’ is spread over the Internet about this project – hence, the more powerful we get.

But in link building it is impossible to see any success without proper choice of keyword for link building fight.

That is why we share this info. We need you to be successful, because then we get more successful.

  16. Susan Martin said on January 31st, 2009 8:00 am

    Thanks for sharing this “secret”!

I’d like to promote a gardening niche and used “inanchor” to search several keyword sets that came back with zero competition. Yeah!…But, will using these restrict visibility to only these keyword sets? I’ m so confused (lol).

  17. Admin said on February 3rd, 2009 2:32 pm

    Answer to Susan Martin

We typically do like this: split the keywords into short-term and long-term

    (1) Short-term are the keywords with small competition, you focus on them at the beginning.

    (2) Long-terms – these have bigger competition and (most likely) bigger traffic. Keep fighting for them “on the background” of everything you do in Free Traffic System.

Thus, in some time, you will have a possibility to get traffic from short-term keywords, and then get in addition the traffic from long-term keywords.

  18. proudpapakc said on February 6th, 2009 5:31 pm

Another thing I do is make sure to install a good stat package on my sites (I use statcounter). I, periodically, check what keywords people use to find my site. If I see something new, I immediately create a post using that keyword, to increase my chances of being found for it. I call it “Organic Keyword Research”.

  19. Admin said on February 7th, 2009 5:14 pm

    Answer to proudpapakc

    Nice tip.

And if you build at least some dozens of backlinks to that page with proper anchor text of these backlinks (you can easily get this number of backlinks from 1 article submitted to Free Traffic System) – you will cement the success on this approach.

  20. Steve said on February 9th, 2009 2:45 pm

    Hello,
That was a great post, but…
    Doesn’t the inanchor: mean…
doesn’t the number that comes up mean this is how many pages are using that keyword phrase in their anchor text??? That is what I thought it was. It is a good indictor of competition for sure. I don’t know, maybe we are both saying the same thing.
Because, could I not use the anchor text on my own page?? Say to link to one of my inner pages and that would be an inanchor text link??
    Steve

  21. Terry Parker said on February 9th, 2009 6:26 pm

Nice tip on the “inanchor” subject. I’, a newbie and need all the help I can get. So if I find a key word that has limited competition does this mean I should include it in my page description and meta tag key words?
I guess I’m not clear on what the “inanchor” term is specifically refering to. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you, Terry

  22. Admin said on February 10th, 2009 8:15 am

    Answer to Steve.

    (1)

No, no. inanchor means “show me what web pages have INlinks with this text”

This search operator does not give you all answers, but it helps to see how many web pages have incoming links with this anchor text – how many potential link building competitors you have.

    (2)

Speaking of linking inner pages, surely they will not have almost any SEO effect for your positions. Though some (tiny) SEO effect will be. But do not expect that by linking inner site pages with proper anchor texts you gonna see any results for keywords with even small cometition. Otherwise that would be a loophole in Google algo and lots of people would be using it.

So, backlinks from relevant pages, with proper anchor – the best SEO cure.

    Answer to Terry Parker

Terry, what you are mentioning about meta title, meta description and meta keywords is surely wise. This is part of On-Page optimization (On-Page means something that you can do on your site to improve its SEO friendliness).

But On-Page is not enough (though very important).

And it means that after you found a lovely keywords with low competition in your niche, in addition to On-Page SEO you must start doing Off-Page SEO – in other words, start building quality backlinks with this keyword in their anchor text.

  23. Harriet said on February 12th, 2009 7:15 am

What would you say was low link building competition? when you type inanchor plus the kw- is 10,000 high or low for example?

  24. Admin said on February 12th, 2009 8:47 am

    Answer to Harriet

Well, that’s a great question, but to answer it I need to start from some secrets.

You see, inanchor is the only tool Google allows us to have. But it is not enough to see the REAL and EXACT number of link building competition.

inanchor shows only how many pages have incoming links with this anchor text. But it does not show you HOW many backlinks each of these web pages has.

For example, you can see with inanchor – 1,000 web pages that have incoming links with the same anchor text. But maybe the top page has only 50 backlinks – you thought it was not easy, built some backlinks and got there very quickly.

Now, the bad example. inanchor shows just 50 for your keyword. But in reality the top 10 webpages (out of these 50 pages) have 1,000 backlinks (with this anchor text) EACH. So, you are building 100 links, then 200, then 500 – no results! WTF?! Because to get page 1 you need to overcome the top 10 pages number of backlinks, and they have 1000, and you cannot see it.

As you can see, inanchor is just the tool that helps us to understand how many competitors you have. But how powerful are they? Google hides that (now you understand why).

But, as inanchor is the only search operator that Google allows to use for measuring link building competition – we have nothing else to do but use it.

So, this long answer was about preparing you to the following…

Do not be too encouraged by low inanchor and too discouraged by big inanchor. Though there is a strong connection between big inanchor and toughness of the each of your competitors, this connection sometimes turns out to be a “fake”

P.S. I can tell you the following: if you are serious and ready for a long fight, you can win inanchor even over 1,000,000. Check this site for ‘free traffic’ or ‘web traffic’ in Google (we are page 1 today), then check inanchor and… get down to work :)

Thanks a lot for doing this, you came up with a great idea!

  26. tommy said on February 23rd, 2009 2:01 pm

Is the “in anchor” more important than “in title” or “in url” ???

  27. Admin said on February 26th, 2009 7:11 am

    Answer to tommy

When it comes down to measuring link building competition – only inanchor matters.

intitle means “show me all pages with this keywords in title” BUT these pages might have no incoming links with the keyword (you plan to fight for) in anchor text, that is why they are not your direct link building competitors.

inurl means “show me all pages with this keywords in URL” BUT, once again, these pages might have no incoming links with your keyword in anchor text.

    Thanks for the info.
One thing I noticed is: If I do a search for inanchor: “home based business”, I get only 1,340 matches. But if I search for inanchor:”home based business” it returns over 9 million.
What does the extra space after the colon do?

    Tom

  31. Admin said on March 20th, 2009 9:07 am

    Answer to Tom Mc Carrick

By putting a space between colon and quotation marks you simply “ruin” the way this search operator works.

Instead of showing you how many pages have the keywords in the anchor text of backlinks it shows you another number (by the way, no one knows what exactly it shows, most likely who have a space and the keyword in anchor of backlinks).

  32. Jason said on April 7th, 2009 2:22 pm

I have just found your service and am very impressed.

Is there a way to check the actual number of backlinks on page 1 sites?

  33. Admin said on April 8th, 2009 4:45 pm

    Answer to Jason

No, there is no way to see how many backlinks exactly you should build to get Google page 1.

Big G is deliberately is hiding this info from you.

I am explaining this issue in more details on this blog:
