In general, Google is doing a lot to set up many great trends in the Internet. But when it comes down to certain nuances, even Big G has weak spots. One of them is understanding the relevancy of your backlinks.

I have seen tons of examples of Google screwing up about relevancy, but below is one of the best examples. So, let’s do a simple test. Go to Google.com (international version, not a local one) and do the search for ‘tea’ and the site that I see on position #1 is… well, have a look on the screenshot below.

How Did It Get There?
It has Nothing to Do with Tea!

Well, the answer is on the surface – abbreviation for Texas Education Agency is TEA. And most likely people, when linking back to the site, preferred to put ‘TEA’ in the anchor text instead of ‘Texas Education Agency’.

Do you believe this site is getting backlinks from tea-related sites? Surely no. I assume most of the backlinks are coming from the sites in the same industry (education), local online media, blogs, forums, chats, etc.

So, conclusion #1 – Google does not care about the relevancy of the sites from which you are getting backlinks.

Do you believe that the web pages, from which the backlinks were coming, had anything to do with tea? I hardly doubt it.

So, conclusion #2 – Google does not care about the relevancy of the text, into which your backlinks are inserted.

And what Google seems to care about is:

- anchor text of backlinks

- number of backlinks

- quality of backlinks (for example, reputation of the web sites from which you are getting the backlinks)

- mentioning of the keyword on the page of your site (though, you see, Google does not even understand that the site context is not about tea, but about Texas Education Agency – mentioning a keyword seems to be more than enough, which makes it pretty simple for OnPage optimization)

Ok, Is it the End of Thinking about
Relevancy in Link Building?

Obviously at the moment relevancy is not an issue which is “rewarded” by Google. But let’s not hurry up with the decisions.

We don’t know where Google will be in a year or two years. Maybe they will start addressing this issue more seriously. And though they will never punish for incoming backlinks (for the reasons of it – read & watch this video post), still – why messing up with that things?!

Moreover, when your backlinks are published on the sites relevant to your topic – this increases the chances of visitors from these sites clicking your link and coming to your site directly.

So, it is still wiser to build backlinks from the relevant pages. Not because Google is smart about the relevancy right now (you saw the example of this “smartness” above), but because who knows what happens in future. Let’s start with HOW I found this footprint. In Free Traffic System we love checking what out competitors do on this market – it is always great, because gives you ideas and inspiration to evolve your own service.

So, recently I was checking one of our competitors – and noticed something nasty. Really nasty. A footprint that within a few seconds gave me their network of blogs “on the plate”.

BUT, There is a Nasty and Easy-to-Do Trick
How to Make You Believe that
A Site has Cool Traffic
(whereas its real traffic is not cool at all)

Usually, when you buy an established site with traffic, the owner of this site is showing you cool screenshots with the traffic and says “Look, this is how many unique visitors my site got the previous month! And this is how many unique visitors I am getting per day! And this is in 6 months! …”

Of course, when you see a real screenshot with real traffic stats taken from a site – you get impressed. And the screenshots are usually real – not some graphically edited stuff.

So, what’s the catch?!

The catch is that the info about unique visitors is not an indication of the quality of the traffic for 3 simple reasons:

(1) Uniques can be bots.

Yes, lots of unique visits are robots that just index the info. Surely good stats solutions know Google robots, Yahoo robots and some other robots and try not to include them into the stats results. BUT, today there are so many services which have their own robots, that you can be sure that a site which is nicely indexed is getting dozens or even hundreds of unique visits – and these are not human beings, these are robots.

(2) Uniques can be faked.

Unfortunately this is true. It is possible to “flood” your site with traffic from different IPs and these would be unique visitors (at least for the stats), but these visitors will hardly bring any profit to the purchaser of the site.

Because fake visitors, generated by special solutions, will never sign up to your newsletters, will never buy your products and will never help you to expand.

(3) Uniques can be – non targeted.

Finally, unique visitors can be real people – but people which are not really targeted for your business. For example, in this report about pushing a site to Google page 1 for the blulk of Forex keywords (done with the help of Elite SEO Push) we showed you an example how the quality of keywords and their targetedness can have crucial difference for the business.

The site (shown in the report) was not page 1 for cool keywords like “forex”, but it was page 1 for lots of keywords that are being searched by really motivated buyers and investor. These keywords did not have huge traffic. But each of the visitors was super targeted to invest money into Forex managed account service – and this was a minimum of $2,000. Just imagine what hundreds of users per month can be worth of!

So, quite often it is much better to have smaller traffic (but the traffic with potential buyers, or hungry investors, or passionate info seekers) rather that getting more traffic which is too vague to understand what it is in the heads of the people who come to the site.

Let me give you an example. Let’s say someone was searching in Google for something like ‘hawaii vacation rentals’ and saw the site and clicked this site and came to this site.
