Good tip. I did this quite by accident for one of my sites, and I thought it was a fluke. This is the first time I have seen it addressed and discussed anywhere.
As far as bumping another competetor off first page listing, I never gave it much thought, but now I see that is exactly what happened.

do you mean making the $LINK1$ and $LINK2″ links? Say, making one refer to your index page and the other to another page on the same website?

You are correct, but this is just one of the options. So, let’s list them:
(1) You make %LINK1% to link to home page and %LINK2% to the inner page (exactly like you, Remi, mentioned)
OR
(2) Don’t forget that you can insert several URLs both for %LINK1% and %LINK2%, and Free Traffic System randomly picks the URL when generates a blog post for a specific blog from your publication line.
This means you can have the home page URL and inner page URL set for %LINK1% and %LINK2%, and put it on the shoulders of random mechanism.
BUT
I assume that you would like to have more control over what exactly backlinks you build, that is why version (1) is a better option when it comes down to the control.
